M-DCPS MONTHLY NEWS MAGAZINE PROGRAM
ON WLRN – CLASS ACT

Imagine ice hockey for students in South Florida.  And then go one step further…for students with disabilities. The April edition of Class Act opens with a showcase of the District’s innovative Adaptive Physical Education program. From sailing on Biscayne Bay to scoring goals on an ice rink at Miami Beach, this program for students with disabilities introduces them to the concept of being physically fit for life.

Education in Miami-Dade is a community effort. In its second segment, Class Act looks at how six local museums have teamed up with a middle school to create a very unique magnet program. Shenandoah Middle School students follow an extensive curriculum that integrates the resources found in these museums with the daily learning that takes place in the classroom.

During the lifetime of most of its residents, Miami-Dade’s public schools have been overcrowded, but remarkable progress has been made in school construction with more than 65,000 new student stations added in the last four years.  In an update of the overview done a year ago, Class Act covers the new schools and additions being readied for the 2008-2009 school year.

Airing this month on April 28th, Class Act is Miami-Dade County Public Schools and WLRN’s monthly news magazine format television program showcasing education in South Florida. A winner of eight national awards in its first two years, Class Act can be seen at 7:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month on WLRN Public Television.
