School Board Approves $26 Million for GOB Projects, Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Goals Met or Exceeded

The Miami-Dade School Board approved four General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects valued at $26 million, at its regular monthly meeting today.  Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety; and provide technology upgrades. The projects awarded for design, pre-construction and construction were the following: 


Redland Middle School - Scope of work includes: portable demolition and site restoration; resurfacing basketball courts; selective replacement of windows, ceiling, flooring and metal exterior doors; HVAC improvements; restroom renovations; replacement of storefront curtain-wall and doors; replacement of auditorium seating, lighting and sound system; repairs to wood stage flooring and exterior stairs handrails; upgrades to elevator; and selective paint as required.

Total project allocation - $2.7 million Completion – August 2019

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation –39.2 percent


Meadowlane Elementary School - Scope of work includes: HVAC improvements; window replacement; selective flooring, ceiling and lighting improvements; restroom renovations; covered walkways; new playground; site improvements; and painting.

Total project allocation - $6.6 million Completion – November 2018

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation – 15 percent

Total Sub-Contractor Small Business Enterprise Participation – 72.5 percent


West Lakes Preparatory Academy - Scope of work includes: remodeling of buildings 6 and 7 to accommodate 13 additional classrooms, new P.E. shelter and play courts, renovation of buildings 1 and 3, new covered entrance, miscellaneous site improvements, and exterior and interior painting.

Total project allocation - $6.9 million Completion – October 2018

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation – 15 percent

Total Sub-Contractor Small Business Enterprise Participation – 37.59 percent


Secondary Facility at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School - Scope of work includes: construction of a new two-story classroom building including general and science classrooms, science and computer labs, interior and exterior dining and food service areas, safety and security systems, and ancillary facilities such as parking.

Total project allocation - $9.8 million Completion – September 2018

Total Sub-Contractor Small Business Enterprise Participation – 26.12 percent


The District-established S/MBE utilization goals were met or exceeded for the architects and contractors, with highly diverse sub-consultant teams. This was further strengthened by a strong commitment to Local Workforce Utilization. 


Continued fidelity to the implementation of the GOB program and the District’s steady commitment to inclusiveness and diversity in its procurement process are positively impacting the quality of the educational environment and the local economy.
