Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board Member Dr. Lawrence Feldman, VH1 Save The Music Foundation Senior Director Chiho Okuizumi Feindler and Principal John A. Galardi joined approximately 500 students yesterday at South Dade Middle School for an unveiling of musical instruments that were donated by the foundation. South Dade is one of several M-DCPS schools receiving instruments from VH1, whose donations so far during the school year total $41,000.
A nonprofit organization, VH1 Save The Music Foundation has developed strategic partnerships with school districts to build sustainable instrumental music programs by providing grants of new musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools. The benefits of music education are astounding, and studies have consistently shown the positive effect music education has on a child’s academic performance, sense of community, self-expression and self-esteem.
The VH1 donation will complement the investment made by Miami-Dade County Public Schools to bolster music in the schools. Since launching the Betsy Kaplan Music Education Project, the District has invested more than $850,000 to increase music opportunities and strengthen performing arts programs for students in underserved communities.
