School Board Approves Approximately $24.9 Million for GOB Projects Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Goals Met or Exceeded

The Miami-Dade School Board approved the commissioning of architects and contractors for five General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects collectively valued at approximately $24.9 million, at its regular monthly meeting today.  Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety; and provide technology upgrades. The projects awarded for design, pre-construction and construction were the following: 


M-A Milam K-8 Center - Scope of work includes: new P.E. shelter; new six-classroom building addition including student restrooms and demolition of existing portables and site restoration; resurfacing of parking areas and hardcourts and replacement of basketball courts; select window and exterior door replacement; flooring and ceiling improvements; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC ) system improvements, including kitchen; electrical and plumbing improvements; security and fire alarm system improvements; and exterior painting.

 

Total project allocation - $9.8 million Completion – June 2020

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation –42 Percent


George Washington Carver Middle School - Scope of work includes: site drainage improvements; parking lot, service yard and driveway improvements; structural improvements in Building 12; selective replacement of concrete walkways; selective window replacement; interior partitions and flooring as needed; improvements to auditorium seats; restroom renovations and plumbing improvements; HVAC system improvements; fire alarm, security and P.A. system improvements; and selective painting. 


Total project allocation - $3.98 million Completion – August 2020

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for architect’s team) – 52 percent

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) – 12 percent


Miami Lakes Middle School - Scope of work includes: portable demolition and site restoration; parking lot, service yard and driveway improvements; selective replacement of exterior doors and frames; selective flooring improvements; HVAC system improvements; fire alarm system and electrical improvements; and selective painting.


Total project allocation – $3.75 million Completion – August 2020

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for architect’s team) – 58.5 percent

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) – 10 percent

Hialeah Middle School - Scope of work includes: new PE shelter; parking lot, service yard and driveway improvements; basketball court improvements; restroom renovations and plumbing improvements; selective lighting, fixture and flooring improvements; refinishing of auditorium seats (as required) and stage lighting upgrades; improvement  HVAC system, elevator, and security camera system; and selective interior/exterior painting.


Total project allocation - $3.8 million Completion – August 2020

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation – 43 percent

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) – 14 percent


Arvida Middle School - Scope of work includes: new basketball standards; new entrance doors; HVAC system improvements; P.A. and security system improvements; selective flooring improvements; electrical and plumbing improvements; and selective painting.


Total project allocation - $3.59 million Completion – August 2020

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation – 35 percent

Total Sub-Consultant Small Business Enterprise Participation (for contractor’s team) – 10 percent


The District-established S/MBE utilization goals were met or exceeded for the architects and contractors, with highly diverse sub-consultant teams. This was further strengthened by a strong commitment to local workforce utilization by the contractors. 


Continued fidelity to the implementation of the GOB program and the District’s steady commitment to inclusiveness and diversity in its procurement process are positively impacting the quality of the educational environment and the local economy.
