M-DCPS Kicks Off GOB Project for Ben Sheppard Elementary in Hialeah
Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho was joined by District and school staff last week to officially kick off construction of a new classroom facility at Ben Sheppard Elementary School in Hialeah. Architect Laura M. Perez & Associates, Inc. and J.R.T. Construction Company were commissioned to deliver the $6.4 million project. The project will have a 20 percent Small/Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) utilization with a highly diverse sub-consultant team for construction.
Named for the late, beloved Dr. Ben Sheppard, who was best known as a School Board member and chairman from 1968 until his death in 1980, the school’s scope of work will include a new 11,965 sq.ft. classroom addition with 286 student stations. Ten existing buildings will be renovated; new parent drop-off, covered walkways, and parking lot will be installed. Improvements will be made to lighting and security, among several other features of the school.
For Ben Sheppard’s principal, Dr. Eduardo Tagle, the new addition “will be a building that will provide unlimited and rich learning experiences. A place where student dreams and goals can be forged together with a strong educational foundation. A place where the community can feel proud as they witness our school’s progress and growth as we continue to raise the bar and advocate for equity and equality.”
