Hundreds Attend Stellar Bahamas Benefit Concert Performed by M-DCPS Students and Employees

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) held a Bahamas Benefit Concert last Saturday at  Miami Arts Studio (MAS) 6-12 at Zelda Glazer, which  featured performing groups from MAS, South Miami Middle, Winston Park K-8 Center, Miami Shores Elementary, Miami Norland Senior High, Jose de Diego Middle, W.R. Thomas Middle, South Miami K-8 Center, Southwood Middle, Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro Elementary, New World School of the Arts, the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Arthur & Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, Coral Gables Senior High, Hialeah Gardens Senior High, Miami Northwestern Senior High, Hialeah Gardens Middle and Coral Reef Senior High. 


M-DCPS, through The Foundation for New Education Initiative (FNEI), raised more than $70,000 for Operation Helping Hands to help support hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas.  WPLG Anchor Louis Aguirre served as the master of ceremonies.


Concert sponsors were the Miami Dolphins, Arey Jones, and Dade Tech Solutions, along with partners Curriculum Associates and Toyota of North Miami.Wanda “Star” Williams & the Starlettes from Miami Shores Elementary performed “Da Doo Ron Ron”

The Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro Elementary School Chorus performed Peter Pan’s “I Won’t Grow Up”

Prior to the concert, a ribbon-cutting/naming ceremony was held for the new 700-seat, state-of-the-art theater at MAS, where the concert was held. The center was named for the late architect and entrepreneur José Milton. A recording studio at MAS was made possible by a $100,000 donation from the José Milton Foundation.



Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho (center) is joined by School Board members Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman, Mari Tere Rojas, and Dr. Marta Pérez, the Milton family; Principal Dr. Miguel A. Balsera; students; and District representatives to officially cut the ribbon on the new José Milton Center for the Performing Arts
