The Miami-Dade School Board approved the commissioning of architects and a construction award related to three General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects valued at approximately $19.8 million yesterday, during its regular monthly meeting.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety; and provide technology upgrades. The following are details of the projects:
Dr. Gilbert L. Porter Elementary School and Primary Learning Center – The scope of work for this project includes, but is not limited to, demolition and removal of a portable; replacement of the existing Energy Management System (EMS), new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment throughout the entire facility, selected restroom renovations; replacement of electric water coolers to be ADA compliant; new ADA accessible playground with shade canopy and synthetic grass safety-surface and replacement of an existing playground surface area with a new synthetic grass safety-surface area and a new 20 foot shade canopy; resurfacing and restriping of hardcourts and improvements to existing basketball standards; resealing and restriping existing parking lot; new parking and drop-off areas; upgrades to existing security system; exterior painting and other miscellaneous improvements throughout.
Total project allocation - $4.6 million (partial GOB funding) Completion – March 2022
Total Sub-Consultant S/MBE Participation: 47 percent
Dr. Toni Bilbao Preparatory Academy – Due to the similarity of scope and programming for the Phase II, Addition of Middle School Grades 6-8 at Dr. Toni Bilbao Preparatory Academy, staff determined that a reuse of the new three-story classroom building design used at Comstock Elementary School would be economically advantageous to the District. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to, construction of the three-story classroom building to house 454 student stations (approximately 38,072 gross square feet), including all required covered walkways; addition of new parking spaces to existing parking area; new fire alarm, public address and clock, instructional TV, security and security camera, and telecom/data systems; and campus-wide site drainage corrections.
Total project allocation - $12 million Completion – August 2021
Total Sub-Consultant S/MBE Participation: 30.5 percent
Shenandoah Middle School – The proposed scope of work for this project includes, but is not limited to, construction of a new one-story classroom building consisting of seven classrooms, three restrooms, an office administration area, mechanical room, electrical room, telecom room, covered walkway and a building with attached physical education shelter. The project also consists of an additional covered walkway, parking lot expansion, fences and gates, all site utilities and civil/site work associated with new building and other miscellaneous upgrades throughout.
Total project allocation - $3.2 million Completion – November 2020
