Calling All Student Programmers! M-DCPS to Award $10k in Prizes for ‘Dadeschools Coding Challenge’

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will begin accepting proposals from middle and senior high school students for real-life application concepts starting today - Friday, Nov. 1 through Monday, Nov. 18, 2019.

The “Dadeschools Coding Challenge” is sponsored by Information Technology Services and requires middle and senior high school students to design, create, pilot and manage a real-life application (app) that will allow their peers to view and keep track of their community service hours. The app also will allow school administrative staff to view, approve or deny all hours submitted by students.  The designers of the first-place winning app will receive a $7,000 prize; a second-place prize will also be awarded in the amount of $3,000.

In order to be eligible, students must work in teams of three or more and must have an adult team sponsor. Phase one is the proposal, which must be submitted no later than November 18, 2019, and must include the following: team member biographies; a video, PowerPoint, and/or written idea of their concept; and images, sketches or artwork.

The teams will be coached by a group of developers, designers, project managers and security experts who will guide and collaborate with the students throughout the process.

There are six phases to the challenge, which ends in the spring of 2020. To see the other phases and for more information, visit
