Four Finalists Vie for Miami-Dade Schools’ Teacher of the Year Award

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will host the 2021 Francisco R. Walker Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year dinner to name the most outstanding teacher throughout the District on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 7 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center. The hotel is located at 711 N.W. 72nd Avenue, Miami, FL  33126.

The four finalists, the regions they represent and their schools are as follows:

·       North – Vanessa M. Valle, Hialeah Gardens Senior High

·       Central – Ashley C. R. Vangates, George Washington Carver Elementary

·       South – Stephen M. Pereira Jr., School for Advanced Studies – Wolfson Campus

·       Adult/Technical Colleges and Educational Opportunity & Access – Lisa Y. Jones – C.O.P.E. Center North

The signature sponsors are Office Depot, South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union, United Way of Miami-Dade, Univision 23/UniMas 69 and Kendall Toyota who will present the winner with the keys to a new car. The supporting sponsor is Fox-Mar Photography. This event is in partnership with United Teachers of Dade (UTD), Miami-Dade County Council of PTA/PTSA and the Dade Association of School Administrators (DASA).

The District and UTD also will recognize the 2020 Rookie Teacher of the Year finalists and announce the winner at the event. The finalists are as follows:

·       North – Kalyn Lee, Miami Carol City Senior High

·       Central – Marissa Talbot, Phyllis Ruth Miller Elementary

·       South – Alexander K. Chumbley, Medical Academy for Science and Technology (MAST) @ Homestead

·       Adult/Technical Colleges and Educational Opportunity & Access – Dr. Elliot Joseph, Jan Mann Educational Center
