South Florida Demonstrates Its Commitment to Education at Fifth Annual Superintendent’s 5K Challenge

Thousands of teachers, students, parents and community supporters began gathering before dawn, joining Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho to run and walk in support of education at the fifth annual Superintendent’s 5K Challenge held last Saturday in downtown Miami’s Maurice A. Ferré Park.

This year’s fastest male runner was 16-year-old Alexandre Chevalier an 11th grader from Coral Gables Senior High, with a time of 18:15. The female winner was Ana D. Cadreche, a Special Education teacher from Georgia Jones-Ayers Middle with a time of 21:51.

In preparation for the 5K, Miami-Dade County Public Schools consulted with the Florida Department of Health, which advised there was no need to postpone or cancel due to the additional precautions the District was taking, such as having hand-washing stations & sanitizer for participants.

Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho joins forces with Miami Marathon co-founder and the county’s Chief Running Officer Frankie Ruiz to encourage the community to live an active lifestyle, while also supporting our schools.

The event was organized by the Foundation for New Education Initiatives (FNEI), which was created by the School Board in 2008 as a District direct-support organization charged with seeking philanthropic funding to support students and innovative programs.
