School Board Approves Commission of Architectural Firm, Construction Awards for Several GOB Projects

The Miami-Dade School Board commissioned an architectural/engineering firm Wednesday for the facility replacement of Herbert A. Ammons Middle School, and a Construction Management at-Risk firm for the New School Facility (Grades 6-8) and workforce housing in Brickell. Construction will also begin shortly at four other schools following the School Board  approved construction contracts for General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects valued at more than $24 million.

 

Zyscovich, Inc. (ZI) has been commissioned as the architect/engineer of record to replace the existing portables at Ammons Middle with a new state-of-the-art school facility to house 1,408 student stations, which will include general purpose classrooms (English, mathematics, and social studies), skills development labs, science demo classrooms, Exceptional Student Education (ESE) classrooms, art and music labs, physical education and business education facilities, a media center, administrative offices, food service facilities, as well as other support spaces and site improvements.

 

Built in 2003, Ammons Middle is a school-wide International Baccalaureate Middle School Program located in southwest Miami-Dade. ZI will use a total Sub-Contractor Small/Micro Business Utilization (S/MBE) participation of 20.5 percent and Minority/Women Business Enterprise Utilization (M/WBE) participation of 18 percent. The $37 million project is scheduled to be completed by January 2023.

 

Suffolk Construction Company Inc. (SC) has been commissioned as the Construction Management at-Risk firm for the New School Facility (Grades 6-8) and workforce housing in the Brickell area. This project will feature a new seven-story building to accommodate up to 610 student stations; including general purpose classrooms (English, mathematics and social studies), science demo classrooms, ESE classrooms, health, art, music and physical education facilities, a skills development lab, media center, administration, reception area, clinic, conference room, food service facilities, and all supporting spaces. This project will also feature two levels of 10 Workforce Housing units, which will be independently operated and separated from school functions, complete with independent entrance/exits.

 

SC will use a total S/MBE participation of 10 percent and M/WBE participation of 10.8 percent. This project is valued at $36 million and will be completed by August of 2022.


Veitia Padron, Inc. (VPI) was awarded a construction contract to deliver GOB renovation improvements at Earlington Heights Elementary School, which will include a new drop-off area with shade structure, window replacement, HVAC upgrades, exterior painting, a new playground structure, new P.E. shelter featuring fully-integrated solar panels, replacement of basketball goal posts, and volleyball nets and posts.

 

Located in the Brownsville neighborhood of Miami, Earlington Heights Elementary was built in 1936, with additions constructed later. The campus is currently comprised of eight permanent buildings situated on an approximately seven-acre parcel of land. The facility has a permanent capacity of 656 student stations.

 

VPI will use a total S/MBE participation of 18.19 percent and M/WBE participation of 13.25 percent. VPI will provide Local Workforce Utilization of 20 percent for construction within a county-wide radius. The $3.4 million project is scheduled to be completed by September 2021.

 

M.A.C. Construction, Inc. (M.A.C.) was awarded a construction contract to deliver GOB renovation improvements at Coral Way K-8 Center. The project includes replacement of windows, HVAC upgrades, doors, group restroom renovations, ceiling tiles, vinyl tile flooring, shingle roofing, HVAC system in the kitchen, electrical upgrades; as well as repair and restoration of the outdoor perimeter fence and gates, artificial turf and basketball courts.

 

Coral Way K-8 is located in the Shenandoah neighborhood of Miami and was built in 1930, with additions constructed later. It is currently comprised of 15 permanent buildings situated on an approximately 2.6-acre parcel of land. The facility will have a total of 650 student stations upon completion. 

 

M.A.C. will use a total S/MBE participation of 46.32 percent and a M/WBE participation of 18.29 percent. M.A.C. will provide a Local Workforce Utilization of 20 percent for construction within a county-wide radius. The $5.7 million project is slated by September 2022.

 

Florida Lemark was awarded a construction contract to deliver GOB renovation improvements at M.A. Milam K-8 Center for a new six-classroom building addition, including site renovations and a new P.E. shelter with integrated solar panels. The project also includes demolition of existing portables, associated walkways and stairs; and replacement of the HVAC system, windows and doors, ceiling and floors; as well as exterior paint, water and sewer upgrades.

 

Milam K-8 is located in Hialeah at the intersection of West 16th Avenue and West 60th  Street. The existing school was built in 1961 with additions constructed later and is situated on an approximately 10-acre parcel of land. The school has a permanent capacity of 952 student stations and will have 1,084 student stations upon completion.

 

Florida Lemark will use a total S/MBE participation of 12.87 percent and a M/WBE participation of 9.31 percent. The firm will provide Local Workforce Utilization of 20 percent for construction within a county-wide radius. The $10.7 million project is scheduled to be completed in May of 2022.

 

H.A. Contracting Corp. was awarded a construction contract to deliver GOB renovation improvements at Miami Edison Senior High School. The project includes the campus-wide renovation of restrooms, repairs to the existing aluminum-covered walkways, and resurfacing and restriping of parking lots, basketball courts and the track; as well as installation of new drinking fountains, kitchen water heater, lighting in mechanical rooms, and exterior school lighting. Painting and fire alarm upgrades are also part of this project.

 

Located in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, Miami Edison Senior High was built in 1948 on 23-acres. With additions constructed later, Edison has three permanent buildings and 1,621 student stations.

 

H.A. Contracting will use a total S/MBE participation of 15.11 percent and a M/WBE participation of 24.58 percent. The firm will provide Local Workforce Utilization of 20 percent for construction within a county-wide radius. The $4.4 million project is scheduled to be completed in January of 2022.
