SIX LOCAL EDUCATORS ATTEND REGIONAL
SCHOOL ACCREDITATION CONFERENCE

Six Miami-Dade County Public Schools representatives participated in
the 105th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools in Atlanta, December 3-6. They included Region VI
Superintendent George M. Koonce, Jr.; Melissa Patrylo, principal, and
Linda Grant, teacher, from the School for Advanced Studies; and
Noward Dean, principal, and Elaine Thomas, vice-principal, from Miami
Lakes Technical Education Center.
Delegates attended workshops and seminars on topics including the
accreditation process, distance learning and technology issues,
character education, brain-based teaching and learning, and
international education.
Founded in 1895 and headquartered in Decatur, Ga., the Southern
Association is one of six regional accrediting bodies in the U.S. It
works with schools and colleges in 11 Southern states from Virginia
to Texas, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America. Accreditation is a
non-governmental and voluntary process concerned with improving
educational quality and assuring the public that member institutions
meet established standards.
