Miami-Dade County Public Schools is celebrating the month of February as National Black History Theme Month. This year's theme, "Heritage and Horizons: The African American Legacy and the Challenges of the 21st Century," was selected by the Association for Study of African-American Life and History, Inc.

A list of speakers and curriculum materials may be obtained by calling the Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., at 305-636-2390; or visiting the location at 5400 N.W. 22 Ave., Building C, Suite 101, Miami.

National Black History Theme Month initially began in 1915 as a week-long observance by a Harvard-educated historian, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Expanded to a month in 1976, the annual event celebrates the cultural, social, spiritual and economic contributions of African Americans in the United States.
