During Miami-Dade Days in Tallahassee, April 5-6, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will launch a campaign to promote science and mathematics by involving state legislators in experiments and problem solving. Titled "Just Read... Investigate + Calculate," the campaign is designed to stimulate student interest in math and science and improve academic performance.

The governor, legislators, members of the Miami-Dade County School Board and other dignitaries will begin their day of discovery at 7:30 a.m., on Thursday, Apr. 6, at a breakfast where Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas will announce his plan to improve math and science literacy. Breakfast guests will then be asked to participate in Got Chips!... a chocolate chip "guestimation" activity. At 9:30 a.m. guests will meet in the capitol's rotunda to gain firsthand knowledge of engineering and design principles by participating in the Great Floridian Egg Drop. Participants will drop specially designed spacecraft from the upper levels of the rotunda to see which vehicles safely land their egg 'passengers' on the rotunda floor below.

From 10-11:30 a.m., legislators will build and launch their own rockets. Competitors will be judged on flight success and distance travelled. Additionally, Miami Coral Park Senior High's nationally acclaimed robotics team will demonstrate their skills.

At noon, all legislators are invited to a paella lunch in the capitol's courtyard.

"Science and math are cornerstones of the technology that will drive our students' futures," said Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas. "We are pleased to invite our state's legislators to participate in these activities so that they may realize the importance of science and math in our everyday lives."
