August 25, 2000
Miami-Dade County Public Schools has reached an understanding with
the Florida Department of Education regarding compliance with
Florida's fire code, which allows schools to open as scheduled on
August 28th.
Copies of Life Safety Certifications for schools have been forwarded
to Florida Education Commissioner Tom Gallagher. School officials
will report their progress in making necessary corrections to schools
to the commissioner on a monthly basis until February 2001, when all
improvements are expected to be completed.
As a result of the agreement, plaintiffs in the case of Stevens v.
Miami-Dade County School Board have agreed to stay their lawsuit for
30 days while corrections are made. School officials will report
their progress to U.S. Magistrate William Turnoff on Sept. 12.
Corrections to fire-alarm systems will be given first priority. Large
capitalization projects, which may require more time to complete,
will be addressed concurrently.
