Miami-Dade County Superintendent of Schools Roger C. Cuevas has been awarded the top academic medal of France, the “Commandeur dans l'ordre des Palmes Academiques.”

French consul general Philippe Chatignoux presented the medal to Superintendent Cuevas at the monthly Miami-Dade County School Board meeting saying “for 15 years, you have been supportive of the French program in this county.”

He noted that programs such as the International Baccalaureate have “opened the doors of the public schools” to students from France and that 160 presently are enrolled in Miami-Dade County's public schools.

Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman said that Superintendent Cuevas’s “support of programs that promote multilingualism and multiliteracy have earned him the respect and admiration of educators throughout the nation. We are very proud of his commitment to advancing quality education for all students and congratulate him as the recipient of this prestigious award.”

Joining the consul general in the presentation was Mata Ciampoli, cultural attachee of the French consulate in Miami.
