In a bid to align U.S. education standards with those of other
countries, the International Association for the Evaluation of
Educational Achievement released results Dec. 5 of a math and science
study of the performance of U.S. eighth-graders and their peers in 38
other countries.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is one of only 13 U.S.
school districts to participate in the Third International
Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat (TIMSS-R). Actual results for
these district and the 14 benchmarking states will be released in
April 2001.
M-DCPS volunteered for the study, according to Superintendent Roger
C. Cuevas, to gain benchmark data to align district and international
standards and help Miami-Dade's students meet them.
The globalization of the modern work force demands employees
who are well-educated in math and science, Cuevas said.
Through our involvement in TIMSS-R, we're preparing our
students to meet those demands.
In today's competitive world, being average is not good
enough, said Miami-Dade County School Board Chair Perla Tabares
Hantman. We want to extend the opportunity to excel in
mathematics and science to all of our students.
Miami-Dade's TIMSS-R participation helped the district win a $11.8
million National Science Foundation grant this year to provide
additional resources for the district's "Bridges to Careers" program
for improving math and science teaching.
