Three Miami-Dade County Public Schools' (M-DCPS) students have placed as semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search, a prestigious national competition. The students were selected from 1,517 applicants representing 530 high schools nationwide.

The students, their schools, and the topics of their research are:

Enrique Jose Gomez, G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School
Behavioral Ratings of Performance and Nervousness as They Pertain to Cardiovascular Responses in Men and Women

Michael William Perry, South Dade Senior High School
A Conservation Biology Approach to Monitoring Lepidoptera Populations in Everglades National Park

Irving Jose Zamora, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School
Identity Status and Psychological Distress as a Function of Developmental Stage

Intel awards a $1,000 scholarship to each semifinalist and $1,000 to his or her school. Additionally, all semifinalists and their teachers receive a certificate of merit and students are recommended for admission and financial assistance at select colleges and universities.

M-DCPS' Division of Advanced Academic Programs focuses its science internship programs' emphasis on increasing participation in this national competition. The 34 participants in this year's competition reflect a 42 percent increase in the number of students completing research projects and submitting applications. The three M-DCPS semifinalists are among 14 from Florida, which ranked fourth in the nation in the number of semifinalists.
