Singled out for its outstanding support of high quality-arts
education, the Miami-Dade County School Board was presented with the
Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN) and
National School Boards Association (NSBA) Award today at NSBA's
annual conference in Orlando.
A national review panel is convened to select one school district
which receives this honor each year. School districts honored must
demonstrate support, instruction, programming, and collaborative
community partnerships in all artistic disciplines &endash; visual
arts, music, theater and dance.
Embraced by the Miami-Dade County School Board, the arts have become
critical components of the district's arts education program: visual
arts and music are required subjects in elementary school; middle
school students experience a "wheel" in which arts are taught in a
nine-week rotation; and creative writing, dance, drama, music and
visual arts are offered as electives in grades six through twelve.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools also boasts 18 magnet schools for
the visual and performing arts and more than 1,000 full-time art
teachers.
KCAAEN is a coalition of statewide, non-profit organizations working
in partnership with the Kennedy Center to support policies, practices
and partnerships to ensure that the arts are a critical and essential
part of American education. NSBA is a non-profit federation of 49
state associations of local school boards and boards in Hawaii, the
District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth
of Puerto Rico.
