Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has been awarded $11.86
million by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to implement
"Mathematics and Science Literacy&endash;Bridges To Careers," an
initiative to improve the math and science skills of the county's
future workforce.
The partnership between M-DCPS and the NSF has existed since 1994
when the NSF funded the Urban Systemic Initiative (USI). The goal of
the USI Program was to produce sustained and substantive change in
mathematics and science education in K-12 schools. The USI effort in
Miami-Dade focused on the elementary school program. The new grant
allows for math and science structure in the middle school program,
laying a foundation for later studies in high school. One of the
plan's most distinctive elements is having expert math and science
teachers provide teacher education in the classroom, an approach to
professional development that effectively reduces class
disruption.
"Mathematics and Science Literacy&endash;Bridges To Careers" is a
follow-up initiative to M-DCPS's highly successful "Just Read!"
campaign, which stressed reading literacy. The new initiative comes
in response to a Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce report, which
projected a shortfall of workers for 120,000 math, science and
technology related jobs.
