One hundred of Coral Reef Senior High School's best students will be
honored at the annual International Baccalaureate (IB) Pinning
Ceremony, Thursday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m., in the school's auditorium,
10101 S.W. 152 Street. The students to be pinned have completed their
freshman and sophomore years in the Pre-IB program and
will dedicate themselves to the challenge of two additional years of
IB study. They will be pinned by next year's twelfth grade students
who have already completed one year of the IB Program. The colorful
and symbolic ceremony will be followed by a reception on the school's
patio, featuring ethnic foods that symbolize the cultural diversity
of the IB program and its students.
Coral Reef is a MegaMagnet high school, and the International
Baccalaureate Organization, based in Geneva, Switzerland, certified
Coral Reef's IB program last year. The class of 2000 has 50 IB
diploma candidates; the class of 2001 has doubled with over 100
diploma candidates.
IB students study six core subjects concurrently and sit for
international examinations. Candidates also are required to submit an
independent essay, engage in a special course titled Theory of
Knowledge, and contribute 150 hours to community service and
extracurricular activities. IB diploma holders gain admission,
scholarships, advanced standing, and course credits to the most
selective universities throughout the world.
