Florida Commissioner of Education Tom Gallagher will be joined by a
group of county, municipal, and school district VIPs when he reads to
students at Ponce de Leon Middle School on Thursday (Mar. 2) during
the national observance of "Read Across America."
Among those taking part in the 2-2:45 p.m. event will be Dr. Robert
Ingram and Betsy Kaplan, members of the Miami-Dade County School
Board; Eddie Pearson, Deputy Superintendent for School Operations;
Metro-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas; Coral Gables Commissioners Jim Barker,
Dorothy Thompson, and Chip Withers; City of Miami Manager Donald
Warshaw; and WSVN-TV Channel 7 News Anchors Beatriz Canals and Laurie
Jennings.
Thousands of other celebrities and officials will take part in the
third annual "Read Across America," according to its sponsor, the
National Education Association. The event is scheduled on March 2
because that's the birthday of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel, better
known as Dr. Seuss, author of a popular series of children's
books.
For more information, contact Albert Payne, principal of Ponce de
Leon Middle School, at 305-661-1611.
