BLACK HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS TO BE HONORED TODAY


March 13, 2003

Six Miami-Dade County Public Schools students will be honored as Black History essay contest winners at 6 p.m. today at the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) Conference Center, 2200 Biscayne Blvd. The students and their schools are:

Senior High School Division

1st Place ($400 Scholarship) Claudia Dominguez, Felix Varela Senior High

2nd Place ($250 Scholarship)       Jabari Powell, Wm. H. Turner Technical Arts Senior High

3rd Place ($100 Scholarship) Jessica McKally, Miami Carol City Senior High

Middle School Division

1st Place ($400 Scholarship) Maria Moll, Howard Doolin Middle

2nd Place ($250 Scholarship)        Rebeca Espinosa, G.W. Carver Middle

3rd Place (4100 Scholarship)        Leticia Zamora, Shenandoah Middle


The contest, a joint effort by M-DCPS divisions of Social Sciences and Language Arts/Reading and UTD, supports the African American history curriculum implemented in 1994 while incorporating the district's focus on reading and writing. More than 100 entries were received from secondary students in the district.
