GUIDANCE COUNSELOR RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

October 8, 2003

Evelyn Bethune, a guidance counselor at Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH), has won the Council of the Great City Schools' Queen Smith Award for Commitment to Urban Education. She will receive the award at the council's fall conference in Chicago, Oct. 22.

A 34-year veteran of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Bethune began her career as a classroom teacher and taught for 20 years. She progressed on to her current position as a guidance counselor and was on the original staff at DASH, nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

One of Bethune's major goals has been to guide all her students into successful post- secondary pursuits. Through her leadership, college acceptances among DASH students have increased to 98 percent, and the school's 117-member class of 2003 earned more than $5 million in scholarship offers. To encourage success, Bethune has championed College Portfolio Days at the school, with as many as 35 colleges sending representatives to interview potential candidates and critique their portfolios. She also holds financial aid workshops for students and parents in English, Spanish and Haitian-Creole.
