SUMMER READING
SUPT. ANNOUNCES JULY’S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

June 27, 2003

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced July's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our July selections are quality reading materials that young readers and their families can read together during the summer," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced throughout the summer to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. July's selections are:

THEME: PATRIOTISM

Kindergarten - Grade 2

The President and Mom's Apple Pie by Michael Garland

Grade 3 - Grade 5

America the Beautiful by Katharine Lee Bates

Middle School

With Every Drop of Blood by James Lincoln Collier

Senior High/Adult

Flags of our Fathers by James Bradley

Multilingual Selection

A es para decir Américas by Cynthia Chin-Lee and Terri de la Peña

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program to some middle schools and high schools.

July's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website: [
