Prize Includes $2,500 U.S. Savings Bond

November 14, 2003

Carlos Fernandez, a fourth-grader at Kendale Elementary School in Kendall, is the winner of the 2003 Hispanic Heritage Art Contest, which is co-sponsored by The Miami Herald's Newspaper in Education and the Ford Motor Company Fund.

The contest called on students to create a design to be used on a race truck and to provide a short essay presenting their view of "Transportation in the Next 100 Years." Carlos's winning design was painted onto a truck that will compete today at the Ford 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. He will also receive a $2,500 U.S. Savings Bond, to be awarded at a dinner tonight.

"We are so proud of Carlos's accomplishment," said School Board Member Frank J. Cobo, District 7. "His skill and creativity have been justly rewarded."

"My congratulations go out to Carlos and the staff at Kendale Elementary," said Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim. "Creativity and talent like Carlos's needs to be nurtured in all our students, and the staff of Kendale Elementary is doing an excellent job of bringing out the best in their children."

Kendale Elementary received the 2003 Governor's Sterling Award.
