STUDENTS TO PRACTICE TRAFFIC SAFETY SKILLS, JAN. 30

January 29, 2003

Students at Charles R. Drew Elementary School will practice and demonstrate newly learned street-crossing skills at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 as part of WalkSafe, a program sponsored by the Ryder Trauma Center the Florida Department of Transportation. The school is located at 1775 N.W. 60 St., Miami.

Approximately 500 children in Miami-Dade County are the victims of pedestrian crashes each year. The WalkSafe Program is designed to decrease the number of children hit by cars and to improve each child's level of education about traffic safety. The program includes watching safety videos, classroom safety education and outside simulation of crossing the street safely.

Students at 16 elementary schools in the Liberty City area are taking part in the program.
