The Miami-Dade County School Board named former county manager Merrett R. Stierheim as interim Superintendent of Schools at a special meeting yesterday.

Selected from among 22 candidates, Stierheim is the first superintendent in 44 years to be chosen from outside the school system, as well as the first non-educator to head the district. He brings over 30 years of challenging managerial experience to the position.

While the School Board conducts a national search for a permanent superintendent, Stierheim plans to tackle such immediate, critical issues as the system's budget and classroom overcrowding. His other priorities include initiating positive changes in the system, empowering employees and reinvigorating trust and morale, and restoring community confidence.
