DEDICATION OF A NASA AEROSPACE EDUCATION LABORATORY
AT MIAMI CENTRAL SENIOR ON MONDAY, OCT. 21

October 18, 2002

The dedication of NASA's Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) and public unveiling of the Carrie P. Meek Aerospace Education Laboratory will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Miami Central Senior High School, 1781 N.W. 95 St., Miami.

The academy was made possible by the appropriation of $800,000 by Congresswoman Meek, who requested that the state-of-the-art laboratory be located at Miami Central High with involvement from Carol City and Toussaint Louverture elementaries and Brownsville Middle schools.

The goal of SEMAA is to increase retention of mathematics, science and engineering concepts in minority students from K-12 and to interest more minority students in further studies in math and science. The program uses NASA's unique resources to provide students with cutting-edge technology that is integrated into existing school programs.

The Central High site is NASA's 19th SEMAA academy across the nation. It is being named for Rep. Meek in recognition of her support.
