HIALEAH-MIAMI LAKES STUDENT FILMMAKER TO BE HONORED, APRIL 25

April 22, 2002

Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School student filmmaker Verena Faden will be honored on Thursday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m. in the school's auditorium for winning the Scenarios USA What's the Real Deal? contest. School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, Hialeah Mayor Raul L. Martinez and Florida Department of Health HIV/AIDS Services Director Evelyn Ullah are scheduled to attend. The school is located at 7977 W. 12 Ave., Hialeah.

Faden's winning entry, a story about youth and HIV/AIDS, will be made into a short film with the help of Academy Award-winning Director David Frankel. Production for the film takes place in Miami April 23-24.

The Scenarios USA contest was held in the fall of 2001. Students were asked to address the topic of "Coming of age in the Era of HIV/AIDS." Miami was identified as a crucial place for the activity because it ranks high in the population of people living with HIV/AIDS. More than 200 stories were written by nearly 500 students from 16 Miami-Dade County high schools.
