SUPT. ANNOUNCES AUGUST'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH
ADVENTURES
July 26,
2004
Miami-Dade's new superintendent of schools, Rudolph F. Crew,
Ed.D., announced August's Books of the Month today, in
conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ
campaign to encourage reading.
"Our August selections are quality books that young readers
and their families can share during the summer," said
Crew. "Be on the lookout for new summer reading
selections to be announced next month to keep student
reading momentum going."
Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media
specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at
various grade levels. August's reading theme is

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School
Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan, implemented in 1998 to
ensure all students read at grade level by grade
3. Improved student test scores in reading
comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001
for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious
reading intervention program at some middle schools and high
schools.
August's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for
students and parents, can be found online at the district's
