EXHIBITION EXAMINES SLAVERY, ROLE OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE COMMUNITY

February 23, 2004

"Love and Slavery in Miami: A Local History Initiative," an exhibit presented by TROY Community Academy in partnership with Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center and other agencies, will open Thursday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. at Lummus Park, 404 N.W. Second St.

The month-long photo exhibition focuses on two of the oldest structures in Miami: the William English Plantation Slave House and the Wagner Homestead, both still standing at the park, as well as the role that African-Americans have played in the development of the local community.

The opening night event will feature a dramatic performance depicting the story behind the Wagner Homestead and the forbidden love that brought the Wagner family to the area.
