M-DCPS PREPARES TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will commemorate Black History Month with the following events. This is a working list; other events may be planned and will be added as advised.

  • 27th Theodore Gibson Oratorical and Declamation Project                           9/1/03-3/17/04

    This African-American writing competition culminates Wed., March 17 at Chapman Center of Miami-Dade College-Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. 2nd Ave. from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Black History Essay Contest                                                                                    12/16/03-2/6/04

    Co-sponsored by the Divisions of Language Arts/Reading, Social Sciences and the United Teachers of Dade, 6th through 12th grade students write essays on the historic Brown vs. Board of Education court case.

  • Amistad Dockside/Tour                                                                                            1/16/03-3/19/04

    Students enjoy an educational tall ship tour and lecture at Bayside Market Place, 401 Biscayne Blvd., R106.

  • Black History Month TV Programs                                                                           2/2&2/3

    Florida Knowledge Network (Ch. 29) highlights two programs, "Slavery: Slavery in America" and "Great Floridians: Alonzo 'Jake' Gaither", for Black History Month.

  • African-American Read-In Chain                                                                            2/2

    Participating schools will have students read or listen to literature written by African-American authors on-site.

  • Orchard Villa Elementary School-Past, Present and Future                            2/3

    A panel discussion will honor the community activists, administrators, teachers, parents and students who were among the first to integrate a school in the district at the School Board Auditorium, 1450 N.E. Second Ave.

  • National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day                                                            2/7

    Various community events on Feb. 2-6 will highlight the importance of education in the fight against AIDS.

  • Brown vs. Board of Education (50th Anniversary)                                              2/10

    A presentation on the landmark case will also include a lecture from the original plaintiff Linda Brown at Florida Memorial College, 15800 N.W. 42nd Ave.
