M-DCPS HONORED BY SOUTH FLORIDA BLOOD BANKS

Miami-Dade County Public Schools recently was honored at an awards luncheon for its work with South Florida Blood Banks. Forty-six schools participated in blood drives this year.

Four high schools received the Superintendent's Award, which is based on the percentage of participation and senior class size. Felix Varela Senior High School donated the highest number of units of any high school in the state and will be honored next month in Orlando for its accomplishment. South Dade and South Miami senior high schools increased their participation by 400 percent each over last year. Miami Palmetto Senior High School had the highest percentage of participation of all schools.

M-DCPS donated 6,110 units of blood, potentially saving 18,000 lives.

The district raised $122,080 for College Assistance Program scholarships through the blood drive participation.
