MIAMI HIGH IS FINALIST FOR COLLEGE BOARD NATIONAL AWARD

February 27, 2004

The College Board has announced that Miami Senior High School is one of eight finalists, from among approximately 100 applicants, under consideration for its "Inspiration Award" to be announced in late March.

The award is given every year by the College Board to schools demonstrating significant improvement and growth. Applicant schools must be public secondary schools in the 50 United States and 40 percent of their student population must be enrolled in the free or reduced-price lunch program. The school must prove consistent growth across the entire student population in the following areas: participation in a rigorous curriculum such as the Advanced Placement Program (AP), IB, or other honors courses; percentage of students participating in college preparatory course work; and percentage of students accepted to two- or four-year institutions of higher learning.

Once the College Board finishes visiting each applicant school for a final evaluation, the winners will be announced. The top three applicants will each receive a $25,000 gift. The remaining five finalists will be named "Honorable Mentions" receiving each a $1,000 gift. Miami Senior High School is located in School Board District 6, currently represented by Mr. Agustín Barrera.
