SUPT. ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

February 2, 2004

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced February's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our February selections are quality books that young readers and their families can share," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. February's reading theme is AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY, and its selections are:

Theme: AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

Primary (Kindergarten - Grade 2)

The Tuskegee Airmen Story by Lynn M. Homan and Thomas Reilly

Intermediate (Grades 3-5)

Band of Angels: A Story Inspired by the Jubilee Singers by Deborah Hopkinson

Middle School

Trouble Don't Last by Shelley Pearsall

Senior High/Adult

Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neal Hurston by Valerie Boyd

Multilingual Grades 9-12(Haitian-Creole)

Restavec: From Haitian Slave to Middle-class American by Jean-Robert Cadet

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan, implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program at some middle schools and high schools.

February's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website:
