FIVE THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO
PREPARE THEIR CHILDREN FOR SCHOOL

August 9, 2004

Parent involvement is critical to a child's success in school. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) suggests five ways for parents to take an active role in their children's education:

  • Make sure your child gets a good night‚Äôs sleep. A rested mind and body will ensure children are functioning at their personal best.

  • Start your child off each day with a balanced breakfast. M-DCPS will offer free breakfast to all students in school cafeterias district-wide.

  • New students and parents are often anxious about the first day of school. A simple visit to the school before opening day can calm any fears about such things as what to wear or how long the commute will take.

  • Get to know your child's teachers early in the school year, and communicate regularly with the teachers about your child's progress. Discuss your child's problems and work together to correct them. Be sure to review the progress reports and report cards your child receives during the school year.

  • Help your child develop good study habits. Provide your child with a quiet, well-lit area and a desk or table to do homework each afternoon or evening.

M-DCPS has an advocacy director in each of its six ACCESS Centers who can help parents play a greater role in their children's schooling. Parents can also contact Dr. Yvonne Lim-Peterson of the Parent ACCESS District Office at 305-995-2680.
