MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS TO MEET WITH COUNTY,
MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS TO PLAN FOR SCHOOL, RESIDENTIAL GROWTH

June 4, 2004

Miami-Dade School Board members will meet with elected county and municipal officials Friday, June 11, 8:45 a.m.-noon, to continue collaborating in planning for new schools in conjunction with planning for new residential developments.

The meeting, at Parrot Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail on Watson Island, is the second in a series of semiannual joint workshops to take place under an interlocal agreement signed last year by the School Board, the county and 24 Miami-Dade municipalities. The agreement is required under growth-management legislation passed by the Florida Legislature in 2002.

Under Florida Statute 1013.33, every school board must work with its county and municipal governments to coordinate planning for public schools with planning for residential development; this must be done concurrently with planning for other necessary services, such as water/sewer and roads.

The workshop, hosted by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, will feature a facilitated discussion among elected officials to determine priorities and mechanisms for achieving common goals in keeping with the interlocal agreement.
