M-DCPS PARTICIPATES IN HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORTS

August 27, 2004

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, in cooperation with Neighbors 4 Neighbors and Farm Share, is conducting a food-drive to provide relief and assistance to victims of Hurricane Charley.

Schools and offices throughout the district are collecting non-perishable foods, toiletries and other items requested by Charlotte and DeSoto Counties. Although the drive runs through September 3, the first delivery of collected items was made August 26.

M-DCPS is also assisting schools that were damaged by the hurricane by providing supplies and labor. A team of 34 maintenance workers, escorted by two Miami-Dade Schools Police officers, left for Charlotte County on August 23 and took more than 1,000 sheets of plywood, roofing supplies and other construction materials with them. They are prepared to stay up to three weeks and will repair roofs and windows, as well as move equipment from damaged schools into other schools so it may be used.

For more information, call the district's Office of Public Relations at 305-995-1126.
