SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES PLAN TO INCREASE STUDENT
SEATS
September 8, 2004
The Miami-Dade County School Board today approved a
facilities management plan to triple student stations from a
planned 5,845 to 15,000 by the start of next school year.
The plan will drastically reduce a 22,500-plus deficit of
student stations across the school district, which has been
projected to grow to 46,000 by 2010.
The plan also calls for a significant reorganization and
restructuring of the district's facilities and construction
departments to be presented at the October Board meeting.
The reorganization will provide a major overhaul that will
address problems such as weak project management, poor
accountability and lack of effective leadership.
The district's current five year plan for fiscal years
2005-2009 will require funding of $696 million and
encompasses 22 new construction projects to add 22,185
student stations. To provide the necessary funding for
these projects, a revised FY 2005-2009 will be submitted to
the Board this fall.
