Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new K-8 Center (S/S "QQ-1") yesterday. The site is located on N.E. 151 St., east of Biscayne Boulevard.

Miami-Dade County School Board Chairman Dr. Michael M. Krop, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Chief Business Officer J.E. Surash and North Miami Mayor Joe Celestin were among the speakers at the event.

"I look forward to our entire design/construction team, led by our Project Manager Mr. Juan Salinas, completing this project in a safe, quality, on-schedule and on-budget manner," said Surash. "We will be employing our new construction management processes on this project, which I'm confident will meet with everyone's expectations. In January 2006, the students of North Miami will be sitting in their new state-of-the-art K-8 school."

The nine-acre school site will include a three-story classroom building, 1,593 student stations, a physical education shelter, a dining area with stage, a media center and an interior courtyard. F & L Construction and Brown & Brown Architects are the design/build team. Construction on the $16 million project is projected for completion in September 2005.
