M-DCPS TO RECOGNIZE NATIONAL LATINO AIDS AWARENESS DAY

October 4, 2004

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), along with Miami Dade College and the Miami-Dade Department of Health, will recognize National Latino AIDS Awareness Day with a student "Think Tank," 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Tower Theater, 1508 S.W. Eighth St.

The event will provide students the opportunity to voice their concerns about HIV/AIDS, since youths represent nearly 50 percent of all new HIV infections in the United States. They also will discuss strategies to stop the transmission of HIV within our community.

M-DCPS' HIV/AIDS Education Program was created in 1987. Its goal is to prevent AIDS by providing information and resources to students, parents, employees and the community, and also to help them understand the complexities of living in a society dealing with AIDS.

For additional information, contact Jacquelyn White, District Supervisor, Division of Life Skills and Special Projects' HIV/AIDS Education Program, at 305-995-7273.
