SUPT. ANNOUNCES MARCH'S BOOKS OF THE MONTH

WOMEN'S HISTORY

March 1, 2004

Miami-Dade's Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim announced March's Books of the Month today, in conjunction with the school district's successful JUST READ campaign to encourage reading.

"Our March selections are quality books that young readers and their families can share," said Stierheim. "Be on the lookout for new reading selections to be announced each month to keep student reading momentum going."

Recommended by the district's reading teachers and media specialists, these selections are to hone reading skills at various grade levels. March's reading theme is WOMEN'S HISTORY, and its selections are:

Theme: WOMEN'S HISTORY

Primary (Kindergarten - Grade 2)

Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie by Peter & Connie Roop

Intermediate (Grades 3-5)

Who Was the Woman Who Wore the Hat? by Nancy Patz

Middle School

Talkin' 'bout Bess: The Story of Aviator Bessie Coleman by Nikki Grimes

Senior High/Adult

Open Wide the Freedom Gates: A Memoir by Dorothy Height

Multilingual Grades 6-8 (Spanish)

Esperanza renace by Pam Muñoz Ryan

The Books of the Month and JUST READ are part of the School Board's Comprehensive Reading Plan, implemented in 1998 to ensure all students read at grade level by grade 3. Improved student test scores in reading comprehension prompted the Board to expand the plan in 2001 for another three years and to enhance it with an ambitious reading intervention program at some middle schools and high schools.

March's Books of the Month, as well as reading tips for students and parents, can be accessed online at the district's reading website:
