SURPRISING RESULTS IN M-DCPS MOCK ELECTION
MIAMI
&endash;Thousands of Miami-Dade public school students
joined the rest of the nation in registering their choice
for the next U.S. President but with surprising results
according to the district's Division of Social Sciences this
week.
In a district-wide mock election, elementary, middle, and
senior high school students elected John Kerry as the new
president with 64 percent of the vote. George W. Bush
trailed with 34 percent. The national vote, however, found
Bush the leader with 51 percent and Kerry with 48
percent.
Students also flipped the official outcome in the races for
U.S. senator and Miami-Dade County mayor. U.S. Senator Betty
Castor led the student vote with 47 percent, one percent
less than what she garnered in the general vote. Mel
Martinez earned 43 percent with students, six percent less
than in the general vote.
The students disagreed with Miami-Dade County's choice for
mayor as well. Jimmy Morales led the student vote with 56
percent, and Carlos Alvarez came in with 44 percent. In the
actual election, Alvarez won with 54 percent over Morales's
45 percent.
