MIAMI SPRINGS SENIOR HIGH IN TOP TEN AT MATH
NATIONALS

The Miami Springs Senior High math team once again placed in
the top 10 at the national Mu Alpha Theta Math Convention in
Huntsville, Alabama last week.
A team of 25 students competed in different math tests and
placed 10th in a competition of 51 schools from across the
nation. The team won 34 trophies, including eight for team
president Ryan Williams: Number Theory, 1st place; Mu
Individual, Integration, Advanced Calculus, 2nd; Calculus
Team, 7th; Hustle, 9th; and Combined Individual and
Ciphering, 10th. Ryan also earned the prestigious Olympiad
award, for which the top 25 students competed, and a check
for $1,000.
The following math team members also received national
awards at the competition: Rocio Cifrian (incoming
president), Nelia Sanchez, Zane Anwar, Denis Azuaje, Ana
Fernandez, John Karpis, Musa Kurdi, Clark Rinehart, Amirah
Khan, Nasly Jimenez, Luis Alonso, and Rafle Fernandez.
The national competition caps off a busy year of projects,
competitions and fundraisers for the math team. A new season
of competitions begins in December and continues through
April, 2005 with the state convention in Orlando,
followed by the national convention in Honolulu next
summer.
