PANEL TO DISCUSS BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION,
DESEGREGATION IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOLS

January 28, 2004

A panel of former Orchard Villa Elementary School teachers and students will gather to revisit the landmark case Brown vs. Board of Education and to discuss desegregation in Miami-Dade County schools on Feb. 3rd at 10 a.m. at the School Board Administration Building Auditorium, 1450 NE 2nd Avenue. School Board Vice-Chair Robert Ingram will be the Master of Ceremonies, and the Honorable M. Athalie Range will be the guest speaker.

Orchard Villa Elementary opened in 1938 in an entirely Anglo-American community. In 1958, it was the first school in Florida to attempt desegregation. Although the experiment was not successful, it opened the doors for other schools in the state to begin the desegregation process.

"Desegregation remains a significant topic in our community," said Superintendent of Schools Merrett R. Stierheim. "This forum is an appropriate place for us to discuss the challenges we continue to face as we work to unite our children and our community."
