MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS PARTNER WITH NOVA
TO OPEN TWO PARENT RESOURCE CENTERS
August 18, 2004
Miami-Dade parents looking to help their children score
higher on the FCAT, read better, get into college, or just
do well in school can find an array of resources and
services at two first-of-their-kind parent resource centers
opening this month.
Pioneered by Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and
Nova Southeastern University, the centers will open their
doors Aug. 21, 10 a.m.-noon, at Nova's South Kendall Campus,
Miami Student Educational Center, 8585 S.W. 124 Ave., Suite
420, and Aug. 28, 10 a.m.-noon, at Nova's North Miami Beach
campus, Fischler Graduate School of Education and Human
Services, 1750 N.E. 167 St., Room 166B. The grand-opening
events will include an informational mini-fair showcasing
school programs and services.
M-DCPS is the nation's first public school district to
partner with a university to use campus facilities,
equipment, and staff for a resource center run for and with
parents. The partnership was established with funding from
the Florida Department of Education's Florida School Choice
Resource Center and the federal Title 1 program.
"Every time parents visit the center, they will leave with
new information, materials and resources to help their
children succeed in school," said Parent Involvement
District Office Director Yvonne Lim-Petersen.
Available resources will include parent-to-parent training,
lending libraries, support groups, and referral networks.
The centers will also provide resources for teachers,
principals, administrators, parent involvement specialists,
and parent leaders.
The centers will be open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and
Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, contact
Petersen at 305-995-2292.
