LONG-TIME EDUCATOR WINS PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

Dr. Onetha Gilliard, principal at Miami Edison Middle School, was named Miami-Dade County Public Schools' 2004 Principal of the Year in a ceremony last night. The South Carolina native has spent 36 years as a teacher and administrator in the Miami-Dade school district.

The runner-up was Rose L. Martin, principal at D.A. Dorsey Educational Center. Each finalist received $1,000. The runner-up received an additional $1,000, and the winner received an additional $4,000.

Jacques Bentolila, assistant principal at Howard D. McMillan Middle School, won the 2004 Assistant Principal of the Year award. Under his guidance, the school has become one of the top technology schools in the county.

Named as Assistant Principal of the Year runner-up was Ivette Bernal from Broadmoor Elementary School. Each finalist received $500. The runner-up received an additional $500, and the winner received an additional $2,000.
