May 28, 2004

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will host a reading workshop for parents of children in grades kindergarten &endash; third at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, at Miami Northwestern Senior Community School, 1100 N.W. 71 St., Miami.

The "Families Building Better Readers" workshops are designed to provide parents with simple activities that they can do with their children to improve reading performance and overall literacy skills. Every parent will receive a "tool kit" filled with reading activities to do with their children at home.

"These workshops fit perfectly with the community school concept of utilizing neighborhood schools to assist community members in addressing their needs of improving quality of life," said Carol Renick, Assistant Superintendent, M-DCPS Office of Adult/Vocational, Alternative and Community Education (OAVACE).

This training is a collaborative effort between the Florida Department of Education's Just Read, Florida! initiative; Office of Community and Family Outreach; the College of Professional Studies at University of West Florida and OAVACE.
