NEW DORAL SCHOOL TO BE
NAMED FOR PRESIDENT RONALD W. REAGAN
MIAMI - A new
Doral-area high school will include the name of the 40th
U.S. president, Ronald W. Reagan, as unanimously approved by
the School Board Wednesday. The new Ronald W. Reagan/Doral
Senior High School will be located at 8600 N.W. 107th
Avenue.
The name was originally suggested by Miami-Dade School Board
member Frank J. Bolaños to honor the former president
who served from 1981-89 and passed away last June. Following
School Board policy, a naming committee met earlier this
month to hear public input and forwarded its recommendation
for the name change to the Board for approval.
"The naming of the school after President Reagan offers
future students the opportunity to reflect on and emulate
his public service and the strengths of his presidency, the
foremost being the support of freedom and democracy
throughout the world," said Bolaños.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the 2,000-student high school
took place last month. The school sits on a 20-acre site and
will include a 252,000-square-foot facility with high-tech
labs for science, computers, theater, music, art and
language arts. The center also will accommodate vocational
classes and serve as an emergency shelter for the
fast-growing Doral community.
The project cost is budgeted at $40 million and is projected
for completion in fall 2006.
